Total Life Cost Issues.

When you buy any piece of equipment you take certain steps to investigate the features and functions to make certain it will do what you want. The more expensive an item the more research you are likely to do before buying. Things like availability, specification, country of manufacture & price are common decisions. There are nearly always some compromises in all of these, you may feel that paying a little more for a short delivery time is OK or you may feel that buying something with every possible feature is a good hedge against the future.

Most people, however, spend remarkably little time in considering the 'whole life cost'. This cost is made up of many things such as.

  •  Initial price paid.

  •  Running costs: electricity or consumables

  •  Longevity: how long will it last before it has to be replaced because it's worn out?

  •  Maintenance Costs: does it require regular testing or servicing, if so how much will this add?

  •  Spares availability. Is there a cost to you (perhaps hidden) if the equipment is out of action for a while whilst spares are obtained? Imagine the costs to the NHS of an Intensive care bed out of action for months!

  • Example: Would it make sense to buy an industrial washing machine for £ 1000.00 if the manufacturer told you it would cost £ 500.00 per year for a service contract, which was required by the terms of sale. If you could get a similar machine at £ 2000.00 that did the same job but had a three year warranty free of charge?

  • e.g: £ 1000.00 Initial purchase + 3 years service £ 1500.00 = £ 2500.00 OR £ 2000.00 Initial price + Free service package = £ 2500.00               a saving of £ 500.00 over three years on the, seemingly, more expensive machine.

At Turnwright Limited we take a very serious view of all these criteria and we have taken steps to ensure that the whole life cost of our equipment is as low as it can be.

  1. We manufacture in the UK using only very reliable equipment

  2. We keep good parts stocks so spares can be despatched quickly, and parts are used which require little or no servicing. Our hydraulic units are often only returned after 20 years!

  3. We have designed our equipment so spares are easily changed on site keeping service costs down

We strongly advise anyone purchasing our type of equipment to ask the above questions and compare the results. We do!
